Memorial for the children of Bullenhuser Damm
After the mobile exhibition of the 2022 Association visited the Brecht School, the pupils wanted to create a permanent memorial at their school to commemorate the 20 Jewish children. The Brecht School's diversity group was awarded the Margot Friedländer Prize for their intensive examination of the history of the children from Bullenhuser Damm and for the project idea of a memorial. The memorial was developed over the course of a year in workshops with the sculptor Ulf Petersen in his art workshop in Eyendorf and at the school and realized by him from steel plates. In the workshops, the pupils drew sketches and were introduced to the artistic realization and the manual handling of various materials by Ulf Petersen.
Since 2022, the diversity group has held an annual Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration at their school on January 27, in which many classes take part. In 2025, the commemoration was held jointly with the monastery school.
In 2024, the diversity group received the Hamburg-Mitte district assembly's sponsorship award "Responsibility - then and now" in memory of Esther Bejarano and in January 2025, the students were awarded the Bertini Prize for the memorial project idea (video here). Information about the memorial can be found here.
